An Open Letter on Yiddish (top)
Many people have written me to express their concern and disappointment over our recent decisions about Yiddish instruction at Maryland. It is true that we will be discontinuing our current arrangement for offering Yiddish. We have found the funds to be able to extend our current level of instruction through the 2010-2011 academic year, but we will not be able to do so after that.
My colleagues and I share your disappointment. The Meyerhoff Center is proud that it has supported Yiddish for fifteen years with minimal support from our university budget. Beyond the classroom, we have invested resources in building our library collections. To date, our holdings include some 8,000 titles in Yiddish, and we expect that number to grow as recently acquired collections make their way to the shelves.
Nevertheless, as I am sure you are aware, the state of Maryland’s unprecedented budget crisis is impacting both the University of Maryland and the greater Maryland community alike. Our current financial reality shelters no unit from the necessity to make significant changes to their budgets. The Meyerhoff Center has had to make such changes to maintain our fiscal responsibility to our university, funders, and most of all, students. Unfortunately, our cuts are not limited to Yiddish, with a significant impact to our faculty, course offerings, and programming.
To the extent that we can continue to offer Yiddish at Maryland, you have my assurance that we will do so. We will not, however, be able to continue Yiddish in the way we have done until now, and will require creative solutions involving the program, the university, and members of the community.
I invite you to join me in helping to find a way to secure the future of Yiddish on this campus.
Sincerely,
Hayim Lapin
